Roller Derby @ Koutu Skate Park

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

A few weeks ago a group of Sulphur City Steam Rollers took an extracurricular excursion to the Koutu Skate Park. It was in the evening after all the skater kids had gone home. The weather was perfect, the sunset was beautiful, the concrete was fast and smooth, my kids were at home asleep and I felt alive.

Perhaps a little bit too "alive". As the night progressed I grew more and more confident in my skating ability... and less and less aware of my age... zooming down a ramps and jumping off various ledges. The fun (and my ego trip) ended when I flew into a concrete barrier breaking the metal plate on my new skates.

Once I stood up and realized that my skates were the only thing permanently damaged, we all had a good laugh... and I think I scored a few points in the derby book of good hits. It was a night to remember (and perhaps learn from).
