April (Fools Day)

Friday, September 4, 2015

From the time I was very young my parents instilled in us a deep appreciation for the art of humor and the importance of laughter. As my dad's illness progressed, we found fewer things to laugh about from day to day. But up until the end, everyone (including dad) worked hard to preserve the sanctity of humor. My mother has always been a bit of a practical joker and a self professed lover of April Fools Day... so we planned a surprise day of celebration.

Friends and family from all over the country (and world) sent an onslaught of packages to brighten the day. White elephants, inside jokes, things would make them laugh or smile. The kids were fully engaged in the process... decorating the back yard with balloons, streamers, and pink flamingos and gathering the packages for a surprise delivery. After the big surprise, neighbors, family and friends (even Elvis) dropped by the house to offer their gifts and words of encouragement. we finished the day with a nice family meal. It was a special day.
